  • Having an answer to each of our questions, learning to know the Torah, the people and Jewish life through this ongoing search for meaning and lived experience in each of our actions — isn't this a wonderful program, fully in keeping with the aspirations of our generation?
  • ALFRED J. KOLATCH, a graduate of the Teachers Institute of Yeshiva University and of the College of Liberal Arts, was ordained a rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, which awarded him an honorary doctorate. From 1941 to 1948, he served as rabbi in the communities of Columbia, South Carolina, and Kew Gardens, New York, and as a chaplain in the United States Army. In 1948, he founded Jonathan David Publishers, of which he has been president and editor-in-chief since its creation. Rabbi Kolatch is the author of more than a dozen books, the most popular of which are "The Jewish Home Guide," "What Is the Torah," and the bestseller "The Jewish Book of Why," along with its sequel, "The Second Jewish Book of Why." Many of his works deal with naming, a subject in which he is an authority. "The New Name Dictionary" and "The Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names" are his most recent works on the topic. Among the author's other books are: "Our Religion: The Torah," "The Jewish Knowledge Test Book," "Who's Who in the Talmud," and "The Family Seder." In addition to his scholarly work, Rabbi Kolatch has been active in military chaplaincy work and has served as president of the Jewish Chaplains Association of the Armed Forces and as vice-president of the Interfaith Association of Military Chaplains of the United States.
